What do I do if I find an animal?

There may come a time in your life when you come across a lost or stray animal. Here are some tips of what you should do first.

  1. If circumstances permit, try to capture, and bring the animal inside where they will be safe from the elements.
  2. Check and see if the animal has an ID tag on the collar, and if not, take the animal to your nearest vet to scan for a microchip
  3. If the animal is sick or injured seek help from the vet
  4. Post the animal on Lost Dogs of Illinois Facebook group and file a found report on petfbi.org
  5. If its person cannot be found, and you can not keep the animal, contact Famous Fido Rescue and Adoption Alliance for further assistance.

What do I do if I or someone else in the house has allergies?

Allergies do not mean you need to surrender your animal companion. There are steps you can take to make it work within the home.

  1. Ask your doctor for an allergy test to identify the cause
  2. Wash your hands after touching your dog or cat
  3. Resist the urge to have your cat or dog up close and in your face
  4. Keep your home clean: rugs and carpet trap dander and should be vacuumed regularly
  5. Cover vents with cheesecloth or filters: it can catch allergens before they are blown into the air
  6. Prepare with medication: antihistamines can reduce flare ups but always seek a doctor’s advice.
  7. Ask a family member to change the litterbox or clean an animal’s bed
  8. Bathe animals regularly: a frequent bath can wash away those sneeze-inducing allergens
  9. Keep the animal from sleeping on your bed by setting up their own sleeping area
