They’re Not Broken – They’re Just Figuring Things Out

Let’s get real for a minute.

In rescue, we see a lot of things – some beautiful, some heartbreaking, and some that are just… frustratingly misunderstood. One of those things? When a dog or cat gets returned.

It happens. Not very often – but it does. And every time, whispers start: “What went wrong?” or “Was there a behavior issue?” or the worst one – “Is the animal broken?”

No. They’re not broken.

They’re just navigating another huge shift in their world. Imagine being shuffled from place to place, each one smelling different, sounding different, full of unfamiliar faces and confusing expectations. You finally start to settle…and then you’re uprooted. Again.

That’s what it’s like for them.

A returned animal isn’t damaged goods – they’re a living, feeling being trying to understand why their world keeps changing and who they can trust in it. And honestly? That’s not something they can figure out in a weekend.

They need grace. Patience. A human who won’t back out the moment things aren’t picture perfect. Someone who understands that healing is messy, and bonding takes time.

Too often, people are looking for the fairy tale moment – but rescue is real life. It’s earned trust, slow progress, and small wins that build into something powerful.

So, if you’re considering adoption, don’t see a return as a red flag. See it as a sign that this animal has been through enough – and what they really need is someone who won’t give up on them.

They’re not asking for perfection. They’re asking for a chance to feel safe, for good.
