Famous Fido Rescue didn’t begin with kennels or emergency calls. It began with cookies. A small space where dogs and their people could sit together, side by side in booths sharing a snack, sharing time. We believed then, and we believe now, that animals are not property. They are companions. Family. Equals.

That mission, that heart, has never changed.

But the world around us has.

The animals who come to us now are often broken, in body, in spirit, in trust. They’ve been left behind, discarded, abused, or given up on. And we welcome them. Every one. Even when we’re full, even when it hurts, even when it’s more than we can carry.

What has changed is how people respond to this work.

When we opened our doors decades ago, we were seen as a safe haven. Now we’re seen as a service provider. There is less tenderness. Less understanding. More expectation. More entitlement.

If we can’t take in the 30th animal someone wants to surrender, they tell us we’re heartless. If we ask someone to wait, or to fill out an application, or to consider another option, we are told we’re “not a real rescue.” People threaten bad reviews, social media posts, or worse.

And that hurts more than we often let on.

Because we are trying. Every single day. With every ounce of energy we have. When people say we’re not doing enough, it cuts deep, because the truth is, we’re already giving everything.

We’ve stood beside animals as they took their final breaths because no one else would. We’ve rushed the suffering to emergency vets with no guarantee we could pay the bill. We’ve held traumatized dogs who flinched at every touch. We’ve worked through holidays, birthdays, and illness. We’ve missed sleep. Missed meals. Missed moments with our own families, all to be here.

Rescue work doesn’t end when the doors close. It lives in our bones. It settles in our hearts. And the longer we do it, the heavier it gets. Some days, the grief is a weight we can hardly speak of. Some days, it’s the judgment, not the animals, that breaks us.

And still, we show up.

Because we believe in the mission. We believe that animals deserve better. We believe that we can be better, as a society, as a community, as a movement of people who do not give up on the vulnerable.

We believe that what started in a little Doggie Deli, with humans and dogs all together sitting around a table, can ripple outward into something powerful. A world where animals are protected. Valued. Loved without condition.

But we cannot do it alone.

If you can adopt, please adopt. If you can’t adopt, volunteer. If you can’t volunteer, donate. And if you can’t donate, be kind. Share a story. Speak up for the voiceless. Offer a word of encouragement to those on the frontlines.

This work is hard. Sometimes it’s unbearable. But with you beside us, it’s also beautiful.

Help us continue. Help us grow. Help us give these animals the life they always deserved.

That’s who we are. That’s who we’ll always be. And we hope you’ll be part of it.

It’s Christmas Eve. The day before families gather. Food is probably already being prepared, gifts are being wrapped, and holiday music is playing in the background. For most, it’s a time of joy and togetherness. But here at the rescue, our phones are still ringing. Our inboxes are still filling up. The messages we receive are not ones of holiday cheer, but heartbreaking pleas to surrender animals.

We wish we could pause for just one day. To let the magic of the season sink in and to feel the warmth that this time of year is supposed to bring. And trust me – we do still have so much to be grateful for. The compassion of our volunteers, the dedication of our supporters, and the love we see when animals find their forever families – these moments keep us going. They remind us why we do this work.

But on Christmas Eve, it’s hard not to feel the weight of it all.

The stories behind the calls are often devastating. A family is moving and can’t bring their dog. A new baby has arrived, and there’s no longer time for the cat. Financial struggles have hit hard, and someone can no longer afford to care for their animal. And then there are the cases where the reasons aren’t clear – where the animals are simply no longer wanted.

Knowing that a dog or cat, who may have once been a cherished companion, is being left behind during what is supposed to be the season of love and giving – it hurts. It breaks our hearts.

We want so desperately to believe that Christmas is a time for families to come together, not fall apart. A time to share meals, stories, and laughter – not to let go of those who depend on us the most. But the reality is, rescue work doesn’t stop for the holidays. It doesn’t pause to let us soak in the spirit of the season. It keeps going, because the need never ends.

And so, we keep going, too. We pick up the phone. We open the emails. We say yes as often as we can, even when it feels like we have nothing left to give. Because these animals don’t have anyone else. And while the world outside may be wrapped in ribbons and twinkling lights, we know that behind closed doors, there are still animals who need saving.

To those of you who support us – who donate, volunteer, adopt, and share our stories – we can’t thank you enough. You are the reason we can keep answering those calls, even on Christmas Eve. You are the reason we can give these animals hope when they need it most.

And to anyone reading this, we ask: If you can, please consider opening your home or your heart to an animal in need. Not just during the holidays, but all year round. Let them be part of your family – this season and every season.

We believe in miracles. We see them happen here all the time. And as much as our hearts ache today, we also know that hope is never too far away. So, we’ll keep showing up. We’ll keep answering the calls. And we’ll keep believing that this work makes a difference.

Because it does. And it always will.

Merry Christmas Eve from all of us at Famous Fido Rescue.

Volunteering in animal rescue is not for the faint-hearted. It’s a commitment that requires time, energy, and a heart ready to feel deeply. Here at Famous Fido Rescue, we are blessed to have a small, devoted team – people who have been with us every week, month after month, year after year. Their dedication and commitment are the bedrock of everything we do. Without them, we simply couldn’t exist. But as much as we cherish and appreciate every single one of these incredible souls, we desperately need more hands, more hearts willing to join us and share this burden.

The reality is that rescue work is hard. It’s emotionally and physically exhausting. There are days when our spirits are tested, when the stories of animals who come to us are just too much to bear, and when the endless cycle of cleaning, feeding, and caring seems relentless. But it’s because of these animals – because of the lives they’ve led and the suffering they’ve endured – that we continue. They’ve been let down so many times, abandoned, or left with no one to care for them. At Famous Fido Rescue, we have 130 cats and dogs, each with their own story, their own need for a kind touch, a clean space, and a glimpse of hope.

By volunteering, you are not just cleaning a room or filling a water bowl. You’re offering these animals a lifeline. When you clean the cat rooms or the dog rooms, you’re creating a safe, comfortable space where they can begin to heal. You’re giving them a reason to trust again. Your hands are not just lifting mops or sweeping up fur – they’re part of something much larger. Every task you take on lightens the load for us all and brings more relief and hope to the animals who need it most.

This work isn’t easy, and it shouldn’t be taken lightly. Volunteering with us means making a commitment, showing up even on the days when it’s hard. But that’s what rescue is. It’s showing up for animals who have no one else.

Volunteering is creating joy in the small moments, the soft purrs, the wagging tails, knowing that with every shift, with every act of care, you’re giving them a better chance.

We know that it’s not for everyone, but if you are someone who believes in making a real difference, who wants to be part of a team that stands up for those who can’t speak for themselves, then we ask you – please, volunteer with us. Help us clean the cat rooms, the dog rooms. Help us bring light into their lives and give them the love they’ve been searching for. Together, we can make sure that no animal at Famous Fido Rescue ever feels alone again.

Some were cherished for a fleeting moment – adopted or purchased on a whim, perhaps as a cute puppy or a kitten on Christmas morning. But when the novelty wore off, the effort to train them or care for them became “too much,” and they were given away like unwanted gifts.

Others were companions for years – perhaps a lifetime – but discarded the moment they needed help, whether from old age, medical issues, or the arrival of a baby. Some were cherished by relatives who passed away, only to be rejected by family members unwilling to honor their legacy and offer the same love.

When animals end up in shelters, the impact on them is devastating. They are thrust into a world of uncertainty, surrounded by howling dogs and crying cats. They struggle with anxiety, depression, and illness – some stop eating altogether, slowly giving up hope.

These sentient beings deserve better than to be surrendered to shelters like worn-out furniture discarded on the curb. Too often, people rush to get rid of their animals at the first place that will take them without any thought of what their future will look like. We need to do better.

We must take responsibility. Rehoming isn’t something to be done in haste – effort and thought are required. If you must part with your animal, seek trusted family or friends.

If you find a lost animal, post about it online. Put up posters. Take them to a vet to scan for a microchip. Finding a solution takes time, but it’s necessary.

Dumping them in a shelter cannot be the first thought—it should be the last.

The consequences are too great.

The same care must also extend to animals we find as strays. It is not enough to turn them over to a shelter and assume they’ll be okay. They need time, effort, and thought to find a safe home.

For as long as they are with you, you are their guardian, whether they are your own or one you’ve found. Take that responsibility seriously.

There is another harsh reality we must confront: Many animals are surrendered not out of indifference but because their guardians cannot afford medical care. For this, we need community-wide solutions – consider CareCredit, pet insurance, or reaching out for financial help. We also need to advocate for reasonable vet costs to make care accessible to everyone.

Until we all step up – until everyday people, not just shelters and rescues, start taking part – this cycle of neglect will continue. Shelters will remain overwhelmed, and animals will keep dying. That is not something we should accept – not when we can change it by taking responsibility.

Every animal deserves more than just a temporary place in someone’s life. They deserve to be loved for their entire lifetime, not abandoned when life gets inconvenient. These are sentient beings, not objects to be tossed aside. Together, we can make a difference.

We can be better.

Let’s choose compassion – because the animals, and their futures, are worth it.
