Let’s Talk About Full Circle Rescue

This morning, we learned of a dog abandoned in a park. He was tied up inside a tennis court, without food or water, waiting helplessly for someone to notice.

One person, moved by his suffering, offered him food and water. Later, another person, wanting to do what they thought was best, transported him to the authorities. Online, people praised their actions, calling them heroic.

But the truth is harder to accept: that dog’s future is now uncertain.

Why He Would Have Been Safer With an Individual

While both acts came from kindness, neither one provided this dog with what he truly needed: a safe place to land. If someone had been able to take him in, even temporarily, he would have had the security of being nurtured, evaluated, and advocated for until a permanent solution could be found.

Instead, he was handed into an overwhelmed system where animals arrive every day in crisis, and resources are stretched to the breaking point. In that environment, his chances of finding stability, let alone a forever home, are slim.

This is the heartbreaking reality, and it’s why we speak so passionately about full circle rescue.

What Full Circle Rescue Means

Full circle rescue is not just about pulling an animal out of immediate danger. It’s about:

Providing medical care and making sure they are healthy.
Offering stability through safe housing.
Finding a committed family who will love them for life.
Promising lifetime backup, so they will never be abandoned again.

Without these steps, the circle is broken. And animals like today’s dog fall through the cracks.

The Hard Truth

The people who helped this dog today cared, and I respect their intentions. But unless someone in the community steps forward to take in an animal, to foster, adopt, or support rescues, too many lives will be lost.

The safest place for an abandoned animal is often not a system already at capacity, but in the hands of an individual who says, “I’ll take you in, and I won’t let you fall through the cracks.”

Our Call to the Community

Beyond Hardship: Confronting the Culture of Disposable Pets

We recently read an article in the Chicago Tribune on Thursday, September 25, 2025 titled “People giving up pets for financial reasons need help, DuPage officials say” and we wanted to take this opportunity to respond to it.

At Famous Fido Rescue, we acknowledge that some families truly do face financial hardship and need support to keep their animals. We work with those individuals whenever we can, because no one should have to lose a beloved companion due to circumstances beyond their control. But in our day-to-day operations, these situations are the minority. The far greater issue we see is a cultural one: a mindset that treats animals as temporary, optional, or disposable.

This culture shows itself in countless ways. Guardians surrender animals because they’re moving and don’t want to find pet-inclusive housing. Puppies are given up once they outgrow their novelty or require training. Senior animals are abandoned after years of loyalty because their care becomes inconvenient. Many times, we see animals discarded simply because someone’s lifestyle changed; new job, new baby, new partner, and the animal no longer “fits in.” These decisions are not about true necessity. They are about convenience.

Underlying this is a societal failure to instill the understanding that adopting (or even purchasing) an animal is a lifelong responsibility. Too often, animals are viewed through the same lens as consumer goods: easily acquired and just as easily discarded. We live in a throwaway culture, and tragically, that extends to living beings who depend entirely on human care.

We believe real progress requires more than just financial assistance or housing reforms. It requires a cultural shift. We must demand accountability from guardians, strengthen education around spay/neuter and lifelong commitment, and dismantle the normalization of surrendering animals as an easy solution. Until we confront that deeper issue, shelters will continue to be overwhelmed, not because of unavoidable hardship, but because too many people are failing to see animals as family.

At Famous Fido Rescue, we will continue to tell the truth for the animals who cannot speak for themselves. We will not accept excuses for recklessness and selfishness, because every surrendered or abandoned animal is a life disrupted, a bond broken, and a heart betrayed.

King’s Story: A Lifetime of Neglect, Now a Fight for Healing

When King, an 8-year-old pomeranian mix, was surrendered to Famous Fido Rescue, the contrast between him and his former guardian was almost too painful to comprehend. The woman who carried him in was well-dressed, with freshly manicured nails and every detail of her appearance in place. King, however, was in a state of heartbreaking neglect.

His nails had grown so long they curled into his own paws. His ears dripped pus from untreated infections. His skin was inflamed, raw, and patchy with significant hair loss from mange. Every inch of his small body told the story of prolonged suffering.

Dogs feel pain in the same way we do. They feel heartbreak when they’re abandoned, confusion when their environment suddenly changes, and loss when the familiar faces and routines they loved disappear. They feel the sting of raw skin, the ache of overgrown nails, and the exhaustion of untreated infection. But unlike us, they cannot ask for help. They depend entirely on us. King depended on his guardian of eight years, and he was truly let down.

At Famous Fido Rescue, we took King straight to the veterinarian, where he was officially diagnosed with mange. His care will be a long-term commitment involving medication, medicated baths, and ongoing treatment to help his skin heal and infections clear.

“Looking at King’s sore, broken skin is gut-wrenching,” said Gloria Lissner, founder of Famous Fido Rescue. “It is impossible to ignore the pain he is in. No animal should have to endure this level of neglect.”

King deserves better. He deserves comfort, healing, and the chance to finally know what it means to be cherished.

Every single day, we hear the same sickening story: people move and leave their animals behind in an empty apartment, abandoned to fend for themselves. This story we are sharing with you today is not an isolated incident – it happens over and over again, and it is beyond heartbreaking. It’s enraging.

These two innocent cats are just one example of the countless lives lost due to this callous and inhumane behavior. They were left with nothing – no food, no water, and no hope. By the time they were found, it was too late. One had already passed, and the other, too weak to stand, crawled to their companion’s side, crying out in pain before taking their final breath.

We’re sorry we didn’t get there in time. We tried. We fight every single day to save lives like this, to intervene before it’s too late, but the reality is, these animals should never be abandoned in the first place. The suffering they endure – the fear, the hunger, the slow, agonizing deaths – is entirely preventable.

These animals deserve better. They deserve compassion, commitment, and a world where abandonment is unthinkable. To the people who do this: your actions are sickening. You are not walking away without consequence, because their stories will be told, and we will fight for a future where no animal is left behind.

Let this serve as a reminder to all of us: our responsibility to animals is not conditional. It is a lifelong promise. We must be better. They depend on us -and they deserve nothing less.

Blueface’s Story: The Impact of Interventions

At Famous Fido Rescue, every life saved is a story of hope, resilience, and the incredible power of community. Today, I want to share with you the remarkable journey of Blueface, a young pup whose life was saved thanks to the unwavering support of our donors and friends.

A Desperate Call for Help

Blueface, a sweet 3-year-old dog, found himself in a dire situation when he swallowed a hairbrush. His loving dad rushed him to an emergency vet, where they discovered the deadly obstruction in his intestine. The initial ultrasound and X-ray cost $1200, but the life-saving surgery needed to remove the obstruction was quoted at a staggering $10,000. Unable to afford such a hefty sum, Blueface’s dad was heartbroken and desperate for a solution.

The Intervention Program

That’s when he reached out to us at Famous Fido Rescue. We immediately sprang into action, determined to find a way to save Blueface’s life. Our dedicated team managed to locate a vet who could perform the surgery for $3000 – still a significant amount, but much more attainable. However, we knew we couldn’t do it alone. We turned to our community, asking for help to cover the costs.

The Power of Community

The response was overwhelming. Donations poured in from compassionate individuals who couldn’t bear the thought of Blueface losing his life. Thanks to their generosity, we were able to raise the necessary funds for the surgery. Blueface underwent the procedure successfully and spent five days in the hospital recovering. Soon, he was back home, reunited with his grateful dad.

Hope’s Story: A Heartbreaking Tale of Cruelty and a Call for Responsible Rehoming

With a heavy heart, I share the story of Hope, a sweet 3-month-old puppy who endured unimaginable cruelty. Likely used as a bait dog, Hope’s short life was marked by pain and suffering. Her story is not just a plea for compassion but also a crucial reminder of the importance of responsible rehoming.

What Are Bait Dogs?

Bait dogs are innocent animals used in illegal dog fighting rings to train fighting dogs. These defenseless creatures are often tied up, muzzled, or otherwise restrained, and then set upon by more aggressive dogs. The goal is to make the fighting dogs more vicious, desensitizing them to violence. Bait dogs, like Hope, suffer severe injuries, trauma, and often death. The cruelty they endure is beyond comprehension.

Hope’s Last Moments

Hope was abandoned, left in a tub on top of a bloody pillow with no collar or leash. The sight of her, cold and lifeless, rocked us to our core. Despite the vets’ best efforts, her condition worsened, and she needed a blood transfusion. Afterwards, Hope’s levels dropped, and we lost her. Her story breaks our hearts, but it also strengthens our resolve to fight against such cruelty and ensure no other animal suffers the same fate.

The Importance of Responsible Rehoming

Hope’s story highlights a critical issue in animal welfare: the need for responsible rehoming. Giving an animal away for free to just anyone can have tragic consequences. It is essential to take the time to interview potential adopters, get to know them, and ensure the animal is going to a safe and loving home. Here’s why this process is so important:

Safety and Security: By thoroughly vetting potential adopters, you can help ensure the animal will not be subjected to neglect, abuse, or, in the worst cases, used in dog fighting rings.
Commitment: Taking the time to interview adopters helps ensure they understand the responsibility of having an animal and are committed to providing a forever home.
Proper Fit: Every animal has unique needs and personality traits. Getting to know potential adopters allows you to match the right animal with the right family, increasing the chances of a successful adoption.

If you find yourself unable to keep a cat/dog, it is crucial to invest the time and effort into properly rehoming them. This means not only finding a new home but ensuring it is the right home. Here are some steps you can take:

Home Visits: If possible, visit the potential adopter’s home to see where the animal will live and ensure it is safe.
References: Ask for and check references to get a sense of the adopter’s history with their furry companions.
Adoption Fees: Charging a reasonable adoption fee can help deter those with ill intentions and signal that the adopter is serious about taking on the responsibility of a furry companion.

I find myself with a heavy heart today, and I want to share a personal note with you all. My dear Gia, my loyal and loving companion, left this world just last week. We did everything we could to save her, but in the end, it was beyond our control. Her absence has left an ache in my heart that words cannot fully capture.

In my role as the founder and executive director of Famous Fido Rescue, I witness countless stories of animals abandoned, unloved, and in dire need of care. It’s a painful reality that stings even more now with the emptiness of losing my own beloved Gia. I often find myself wishing for just one more day with her, one more chance to shower her with love and affection.

It breaks my heart to see others, who are perfectly capable of caring for their animals, choosing to abandon them or neglect them. I can’t help but think of how I would have given anything for a little more time with my girl. And so, I implore you, if you have a furry friend by your side, cherish them, love them, and never take a single moment with them for granted. Let my experience with Gia be a reminder that our time with these incredible creatures is precious and far too short.

Throughout history, soldiers and animals have formed extraordinary connections on the battlefield. From faithful service dogs to courageous horses, these remarkable creatures have provided comfort, support, and unwavering loyalty to our heroes.

In the midst of chaos and danger, animals have been a source of solace, companionship, and inspiration. They have stood by our soldiers’ sides, offering a sense of normalcy and a reminder of the goodness that exists even in the darkest of times.

Cody is Going Home!

Today, we are thrilled to share a heartwarming tale of second chances for our good buddy Cody. The adorable pitbull puppy found his forever home this week through the tireless efforts of our staff who nursed him back to health after finding him six weeks ago, malnourished with cigarette burns on his hind, tied to a post outside a Rogers Park 7-Eleven.

Thankfully, fate led him to the our doors, where his turnaround journey began. Through our tireless efforts and the support of our wonderful community, we spread the word about Cody’s search for a forever home. Even with all he’d been through, Cody’s upbeat and friendly demeanor made him easy to fall in love with. And, as destiny would have it, a remarkable family came forward. The bond between Cody and his new guardian was easy to see and we are thrilled to see that Cody had found his loving tribe.

Cody’s adoption reminds us of the incredible transformations that occur when rescue animals find their loving homes. It is a testament to the power of compassion and the life-altering impact of adoption. Each success story like Cody’s fuels our dedication to our mission and strengthens our resolve to continue saving and transforming lives. They are also a sobering reminder of what could have been a much different story, were Cody to have been taken to an open door shelter. Overcrowding and lack of resources make it much harder for animals in these environments to succeed the way Cody has and avoid debilitating kennel experiences or at worst, euthanasia.

Getting to this point is never easy. All new guardians pay a nominal adoption fee when taking their new companion home. But the medical and rehabilitative treatment needed to nurse Cody back to health took 6 weeks and thousands of dollars to complete. Thanks to the generous support of the Famous Fido community, over $8000 was raised to offset the cost Famous Fido incurred when Cody arrived at the rescue in crisis!

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved in Cody’s journey, from the compassionate individuals who discovered him to the devoted team at Famous Fido who provided him with love, care, and a second chance at a happy life. Together, we are making a difference.

We recently hosted a movie night fundraiser, and it was a blast! We watched the action-packed movie Top Gun: Maverick and raised funds to support our animal rescue efforts. It was an evening filled with laughter, cheers, and a whole lot of fun.

At Famous Fido Rescue, we are passionate about giving every animal a second chance at a happy and healthy life, and our movie night fundraiser was an excellent opportunity to share this passion with our community. We were thrilled to see so many animal lovers come together to support our cause and enjoy an exciting film.

The movie Top Gun: Maverick was a perfect fit for our event, with its themes of perseverance, teamwork, and determination – all qualities that we also believe are essential in animal rescue. We cheered Maverick and his fellow pilots as they overcame obstacles and achieved their goals, just like we cheer on our rescue animals as they overcome their own obstacles on their journey to a better life.

Thanks to the generous support of our community, we were able to raise funds that will help us provide care, shelter, and rehabilitation for animals in need. We are grateful for everyone who attended the event and contributed to our mission to make a better world for animals.
