We’re talking about millions – over 6 million cats and dogs entering shelters across the country each year. It’s staggering, heartbreaking, and frankly, exhausting.

I couldn’t help but wonder – why? Why are so many animals ending up in US shelters, and what could we be doing differently?

So, I looked north to our neighbors in Canada. Their numbers? Nowhere near ours. For example, Toronto Animal Services reports just a few thousand owner surrenders annually – 1,600 to 3,600 depending on the year. That’s just one city, sure, but it reflects a pattern echoed across the country. Canada’s intake numbers are dramatically lower, both in total volume and per capita.

And it made me think – what are they doing differently?

I don’t believe for a second that Canadians love their animals more than Americans do. We’re a nation of animal lovers. But I do think systems and attitudes play a big role. In Canada, there’s a stronger social safety net that can catch both people and their animals when times get tough. There’s also more public housing that allows pets, more funding for community-based spay/neuter programs, and often, better regulation of breeders. While not perfect, Canada appears to prioritize prevention in ways the US is still catching up on.

It’s humbling to reflect on, especially from the trenches of rescue work here. We spend so much of our time reacting – to abandonment, to neglect, to overcrowding. But what if we shifted, even a little, toward prevention?

That’s why Famous Fido Rescue created the Intervention Program – because we know many surrenders are preventable with the right support at the right time. Whether it’s helping with a pet deposit for housing, covering a portion of an unexpected vet bill, offering behavioral advice, or simply taking the time to listen without judgment, we’ve seen firsthand how a little help can mean the difference between a family staying together or a pet ending up in a shelter.

But we can’t do it alone.

Our Intervention Program relies entirely on donations – and the need is overwhelming. Every day, we get calls from people at a breaking point. People who don’t want to give up their animals but feel they have no other choice. With more support, we can step in sooner. We can be the safety net that keeps more animals out of shelters and in the arms of the people who love them.

We may not be able to fix the system overnight, but we can start by questioning it. By looking beyond our borders and asking, “What’s working elsewhere?” and “How can we bring it here?”

Let’s stop accepting surrender as the default solution and start fighting for prevention as the priority. Because every saved bond between a guardian and their animal is one less broken heart in the shelter system.

And that’s a future worth investing in.

At Famous Fido Rescue, every life saved is a story of hope, resilience, and the incredible power of community. Today, I want to share with you the remarkable journey of Blueface, a young pup whose life was saved thanks to the unwavering support of our donors and friends.

A Desperate Call for Help

Blueface, a sweet 3-year-old dog, found himself in a dire situation when he swallowed a hairbrush. His loving dad rushed him to an emergency vet, where they discovered the deadly obstruction in his intestine. The initial ultrasound and X-ray cost $1200, but the life-saving surgery needed to remove the obstruction was quoted at a staggering $10,000. Unable to afford such a hefty sum, Blueface’s dad was heartbroken and desperate for a solution.

The Intervention Program

That’s when he reached out to us at Famous Fido Rescue. We immediately sprang into action, determined to find a way to save Blueface’s life. Our dedicated team managed to locate a vet who could perform the surgery for $3000 – still a significant amount, but much more attainable. However, we knew we couldn’t do it alone. We turned to our community, asking for help to cover the costs.

The Power of Community

The response was overwhelming. Donations poured in from compassionate individuals who couldn’t bear the thought of Blueface losing his life. Thanks to their generosity, we were able to raise the necessary funds for the surgery. Blueface underwent the procedure successfully and spent five days in the hospital recovering. Soon, he was back home, reunited with his grateful dad.

A Message of Gratitude

Blueface’s dad was filled with immense gratitude and shared these heartfelt words:

“Thank you, Gloria and Famous Fido, for saving my dog and giving me the opportunity to spend more time with him. This is truly a blessing from the creator, and I truly appreciate you guys. Gloria, you are an angel, and I appreciate you dearly.”

Why Your Support Matters

Blueface’s story is a shining example of what we can achieve when we come together. However, the reality is that we face countless urgent cases like this one, and our budget is often stretched thin. We rely on the support of our community to continue our lifesaving work.

If Blueface’s story has touched your heart, please consider making a donation. Whether it’s a one-time gift, a monthly contribution, or support for a specific case, every dollar makes a difference. By donating to our Intervention Program, you can help us build a fund to respond to urgent cases swiftly and effectively.

Join Us in Making a Difference

We need your help to continue saving lives and giving hope to animals and their families. Your support is what makes stories like Blueface’s possible. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being a part of our community and for making a difference in the lives of so many animals.

Together, we can ensure that more furry companions get the chance they deserve to live happy, healthy lives with the people who love them.

It is with a mixture of relief and gratitude that we share the uplifting journey of Tino, a resilient feline who recently faced a harrowing ordeal. On September 25, Tino was struck by a car, left to endure pain and solitude on the unforgiving streets. Thankfully, a compassionate soul spotted him, acted swiftly, and rushed him to the vet, revealing internal injuries and a leg fracture.

In a twist of fate, the initial responder applied for Care Credit, securing $1,000 to kickstart Tino’s critical medical care. However, the total expenses for the necessary surgeries surpassed this amount, prompting a call for support. This is where our incredible community stepped up in ways that continue to warm our hearts.

Community Compassion in Action

Your generosity, as always, has been awe-inspiring. Tino underwent surgeries to repair his bladder and amputate a leg, paving the way for his recovery. Today marks a significant milestone as Tino leaves the hospital, heading towards a new chapter with his adopter – the very person who first rescued him from the street.

We are thrilled to announce that Tino’s rescuer has decided to give him a forever home, transforming his fate from a stray cat on the streets to a cherished companion with a warm bed and loving family.

A Helping Hand for Tino: Progress and Challenges

While the initial $1,000 from Care Credit was a vital lifeline, we want to be transparent about the ongoing financial challenge. The remaining portion of Tino’s medical bill is being cared for by the incredible individuals who support our rescue mission. We haven’t crossed the finish line, but we’re steadily making progress, and that is thanks to each one of you.

Your Continued Support Matters

If you find it in your heart to contribute to Tino’s ongoing care and assist other animals facing similar predicaments, we welcome your donations here. Every bit helps and brings us closer to providing the care these resilient animals deserve.

Tino’s story encapsulates the power of community, demonstrating that even in the face of adversity, we can create meaningful change. We express our deepest gratitude to each person who played a role in Tino’s journey and to those who continue to support our mission.

Together, we are making a lasting impact, one paw at a time.

Moving to a new place can be a daunting experience, especially when you have animals. Unfortunately, many people find themselves in a situation where they have to give up their beloved animals due to housing constraints. However, at Famous Fido Rescue, we believe that with determination, resourcefulness, and community support, it is possible to find a suitable home even for those with multiple animals, such as Henry and his four pitbulls. In this blog post, we want to shed light on the challenges faced by guardians during relocation and emphasize that finding housing solutions for animals in need is not an insurmountable task.

The Common Dilemma: One of the most common reasons for animal surrenders is the difficulty in finding pet-friendly housing, especially when it comes to breeds like pitbulls. Many landlords have breed restrictions or pet policies that make it challenging for individuals with multiple dogs to secure housing. As a result, guardians often feel forced to make the heartbreaking decision of giving up their furry companions.

Henry’s Journey: Henry’s experience resonates with countless guardians who have faced similar challenges. When he found himself in a situation where his previous home was demolished, he faced the daunting task of finding a new place that could accommodate his four pitbulls. With a limited budget, the search seemed like an uphill battle. However, Henry refused to give up on his dogs and remained determined to find a solution.

Overcoming Challenges: Henry’s journey highlights the importance of perseverance and seeking out alternative options. Instead of succumbing to the discouraging circumstances, he tapped into the resources available to him. By reaching out to the community, utilizing social media platforms, and launching a crowdfunding campaign, he was able to generate the necessary support and funds to secure a new home for himself and his beloved pitbulls.

Community Support: The success of Henry’s endeavor also underscores the significance of community support. It was the compassion and generosity of individuals who recognized the bond between Henry and his dogs that made all the difference. Through their donations, both financial and in-kind, the community demonstrated that finding housing solutions for multiple animals is not an impossibility when people come together for a common cause.

Alternative Strategies: While Henry’s story is inspiring, it’s important to acknowledge that finding suitable housing for multiple animals on a limited budget can still be a challenging process. However, there are strategies that guardians can explore. These include:

Researching pet-friendly housing options: Invest time in exploring rental listings, contacting local shelters or rescue organizations, and connecting with landlords who may be more open to accommodating multiple animals.

Utilizing animal advocacy organizations: Reach out to local organizations that advocate for pet-friendly policies and offer resources for guardians seeking housing assistance.

Building a strong animal care resume: Highlight your responsible guardianship and emphasize the positive qualities and training of your animals. This can help landlords see your cats and dogs as well-behaved, desirable tenants.

Seeking community support: Engage with animal welfare groups, online communities, and social media platforms to seek advice, assistance, and potential leads for pet-friendly housing options.

The challenges of finding housing for multiple animals, particularly those with breed restrictions, can be discouraging. However, Henry’s story demonstrates that with determination, resourcefulness, and community support, it is possible to overcome these obstacles. By sharing experiences and knowledge, advocating for pet-friendly policies, and fostering a sense of compassion within our communities, we can work towards ensuring that no animal guardian feels forced to surrender their animals due to housing constraints. Together, let’s continue striving for a world where animals and their guardians can find safe and loving homes, regardless of their circumstances.

We’re all familiar with so-called “outdoor cats.” We may even see them somewhat regularly in our neighborhoods. A common perception is that most cats prefer to be outside because they have freedom to follow their instincts such as hunting and having expanded territory. While that may be true where food and fresh water are plentiful, this is rarely the case in urban environments. In reality, outdoor cats in cities face a wide variety of dangers, some of which may not be immediately apparent.

Firstly, adequate food and safe drinking water are never easy to find. Think of the puddles of water you’ve seen on city streets and ask yourself what person or animal would be willing to drink from it. Furthermore, in colder months or during inclement weather, cats have been known to crawl up inside the wheel wells of cars for shelter. When the driver does not notice this and hastily starts their car to drive away, the cat is at risk for life-threatening injury. Cats also face the prospect of injury and disease from the vermin they hunt, larger animals such as dogs and coyotes, and other cats. Without a responsible guardian to provide veterinary care, an injured cat is much less likely to survive for long.

Even the cats who successfully avoid these dangers become at risk in other ways. Stray cats are rarely spayed/neutered and kitten season comes at least once a year. Litters of kittens continue to flood an already overwhelmed system of shelters and animal rescues which contributes to rising euthanasia rates and lower quality of life for every cat in the system. Plainly put, urban environments in the U.S. are almost never built to offer a healthy, happy existence to outdoor cats. For every single cat that thrives in these environments, there are countless sad stories of cats that die in terrible ways.

At Famous Fido we regularly provide interventions for cats found in these distressing situations. Take George’s case for example (the orange tabby). George was a friendly stray cat that was always hanging around the neighborhood. George may have been a lost indoor cat who ultimately chose the outdoors, but since he has not been microchipped it has been impossible to tell. One of the neighbors in the street where George would hang around would feed him in his backyard. George showed up one day looking worse for wear. He was lethargic, congested, and had a large abscess on his leg.

The neighbor who would feed George became very concerned for his welfare and brought him inside, but he could not afford his medical care. The neighbor reached out to us to see if we could help. It turned out to be just in time. George’s health was in critical condition and needed immediate care. Thankfully, we were able to help George get this life-saving care, but it did turn out from being outside, George was also FeLV positive, which made living with the other cat in the neighbor’s home challenging.

The man has been keeping the cats separate while George recovers, and hopefully we will be able to find him a forever home soon. He is safe though and is being spoiled with lots of loving attention so he can heal. If it were not for the compassion of this man and for the supporters of our Intervention Program, George likely would not have survived.

In some other cases, cats are not on the streets of their own volition but are victims of abuse and/or neglect. Hades is one of those cases (the black cat). He was found battered, bloody, bruised and with a leather belt strapped tight around his neck in some shrubs. His finder was walking home when she heard his whimper. She immediately freed Hades from the bushes and took the belt from his neck and saw how he was barely clinging on to life.

She wanted to save his life, but without funds readily available she was concerned how she could bring him to the vet for the emergency care that he needed. When we heard about Hades’ situation and how distressed his finder was on the phone, we knew it was serious and we had to help. Our Intervention Fund helped Hades get into an emergency vet that night and thankfully they were able to provide him with care to save his life. His medical bills came out to approximately $3,000.

This situation could have ended very differently if Hades were not able to get this help, but instead it resulted in a happily ever after as the person who found Hades decided to keep him. Hades now spends every day by his new mom’s side. He built a bond with his savior, who helped restore his trust in people after his very harsh start in life.

Working to see that an animal gets a successful outcome can be time consuming, emotionally tolling, and financially expending. It takes a lot of correspondence, a lot of problem solving, and a lot of commitment. We approach each case on an individual basis and take the time to consider all possibilities before reaching a solution. Often, it takes more than just one solution, as we are usually working through a variety of challenges. So, we take aim to address the core behavioral and medical issues that might lead to an individual seeing that they have no solution but to surrender an animal. There are also many personal reasons, that we work with as well. Our counseling helps to resolve and reach a path of best success for the animal’s well-being.

In Sam’s case, Sam, and his dogs, Gus and Bella were at risk of becoming permanently separated when Sam was not 100% capable of caring for them. Sam had recently lost his wife and his home after spending his savings on her cancer treatment, and sadly her funeral. Sam had been staying with a friend temporarily while he got back on his feet, but unfortunately his dogs were not able to come with him. In the city there are not many places or resources for people in crisis situations to go with their animals.

Sam desperately did not want to see his dogs go into a shelter. He had already lost so much. Thankfully, in Sam’s search for help we were able to connect and set up a plan to help Sam get back on his feet, and help Gus and Bella with boarding. Sam enthusiastically helped with the daily care of his dogs at our rescue center and supported Famous Fido Rescue by helping in the Rescue Store. In this case, we have been able to offer him a commission on sales he makes, so he could save for an apartment of his own that he can share with Gus and Bella.

Our mission to keep a family like Sam, Gus and Bella united when every other option is exhausted is never easy. But we view these interventions as critical to circumventing an untenable shelter system where dogs like Gus and Bella face a much more unforgiving fate.

Ultimately, the reward of seeing a hopeful chapter open in the lives we’ve touched is most certainly worth the work. If you you find yourself inspired by this story and want to join in successes like these, we urge you to consider donating or sponsoring an animal at our rescue hoping for the same chance at a better life.

There is nothing linear about the way we all go through life, there are ups, downs, and in-betweens, but what does that mean when there are animals that rely on us to be their pillar of support?

Famous Fido Rescue’s Intervention program was chartered to help people navigate difficult times in their life and develop solutions, so their animals do not have to be fronted with the possibility of entering a shelter.

Many people call the center when their animal’s needs have stretched beyond their means, meaning that things such as emergency or even basic veterinary care is unaffordable, or they are unable to traverse through training solutions for behavioral challenges.

The Intervention program helps our community have access to these resources, along with the care and compassion of our experienced counselors to work through solutions with them.

Where it is not possible for the animal to remain with their family, the Intervention Program will also help in the responsible rehoming of the animal, so their original family can be involved in the process to find the animal’s forever family, by following Famous Fido Rescue’s Adoption process.

If you and your companion are in need of help, please reach out to us by email at fido@FamousFidoRescue.com and explain your situation in as much detail as possible. We may not have the perfect solution. But we always do whatever we can to help find the best option possible.

Kookoo and Teekaboo are two dogs that are currently part of Famous Fido’s intervention program. They are currently being housed at the facility while their guardian looks to find a home where they can both stay. Falling on hard times, their guardian found herself homeless, but still wanting to do the best for her companions. Recently, finding employment, their guardian is now looking for a home, but is here everyday to give her fur babies some love and care in the meantime. By helping with this case, Famous Fido has been able to keep two beautiful dogs from having to enter the shelter system, which would have caused their guardian a great deal of heartbreak, and the dogs from experiencing the trauma of being abandoned.
